Inhibitory Effects of Apigenin and Quercetin on Rat Aorta Contraction

Abstract
To investigate inhibitory mechanism of flavonoid in aorta contraction, the inhibitory effects of flavonoid were compared with that of genistein that is well known to be a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Phenylephrine-induced contraction was dose-dependently inhibited by chrysin, apigenin and quercetin. The inhibitory effects of three flavonoids were similar to that of genistein. On the other hand, the inhibitory effects of three flavonoids was not affected by 1 ¥ìM PMA, a protein kinase C activator. However, the inhibitory effects of apigenin and quercetin were significantly blocked by 30 ¥ìM vanadate, but those of chrysin and genistein were not. These results suggest that the inhibitory mechanisms of apigenin and quercetin are different from that of genistein in tyrosine phosphorylation of rat contractile protein.
